MmThe historic coronation of the 44th Olubadan at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, was graced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, traditional rulers, and dignitaries from all walks of life. It was a day of pride for Ibadan and for Nigeria.
However, much of the public conversation since then has centered not on the coronation itself, but on the lyrical blunder of the performing musician, Taye Currency. Without doubt, Alhj Taye Currency slipped. But that, too, is part of being human, nobody is perfect, and anyone can make mistakes.
While many have chosen to criticize him harshly, the reality is that his error was not so much the lyrics themselves, but the timing and the setting. The jab could have been reserved for another occasion. After all, the coronation was attended by dignitaries from two major political parties, APC and PDP. And since the PDP led govt in Oyo State organized the event, political undertones were unavoidable, especially as we approach 2027.
Politics loomed large at the event, with both APC and PDP represented. If Wasiu Ayinde had been the guest artist, his performance too would have carried political undertones, only framed differently. Lest we forget, Wasiu himself caused a national embarrassment recently at Abuja airport. No one is flawless.
It is worth noting that before the controversial lyric, “werey lan fi wo werey” Alhaji Taye Currency had been performing excellently, keeping the dignitaries entertained and on their feet. Mistakes, in truth, are part of life’s lessons. They shape us, teach us, and prepare us for the future. I believe Alhaji Currency has learned from that episode and will handle such moments better going forward.
Once again, hearty congratulations to our royal father, the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa I). Long may you reign, Kabiyesi.
