Suspected kidnappers holding victims in Oyo State have reportedly presented a list of demands to the state government, including a ₦1 billion ransom payment, the release of detained bandits, and amendments to certain state laws.
According to reports circulating on social media and among security sources, the abductors allegedly demanded that the ₦1 billion ransom be paid into a bank account located in the Republic of Benin.
The kidnappers are also said to be seeking the release of individuals described as bandits currently being held at Agodi and Abolongo correctional facilities. In addition, they reportedly requested two Hilux vehicles as part of the conditions for securing the release of their captives.
Perhaps the most unusual of the alleged demands is a request for the amendment of certain Oyo State laws to align with the group's interests, although details of the specific laws involved remain unclear.
As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the reported demands. Security agencies have also remained silent on the matter.
The development has generated widespread reactions among residents and security analysts, many of whom argue that conceding to such demands could embolden criminal groups and undermine the rule of law.
Experts note that governments often face difficult decisions during kidnapping crises, balancing the urgency of securing victims' release against the long-term implications of negotiating with armed criminal groups.
Authorities are expected to provide further clarification as investigations continue.
