Troops Tighten Siege as Oyo School Kidnappers Reduce Demands

Security operatives have intensified efforts to rescue the 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, with troops reportedly blocking all escape routes around the National Park forest where the victims are believed to be held. Multiple security sources said the kidnappers have been effectively contained within the forest and, under mounting pressure, have dropped some of their earlier demands, including the release of detained terrorist commanders and the provision of vehicles, and are now mainly focused on securing ransom payments. The victims were abducted on May 15 when terrorists attacked three schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and Alawusa communities. Security agencies expressed optimism that the hostages would soon regain their freedom as rescue operations continue and the net closes in on the abductors.

NIGERIA'S WAR AGAINST INSURGENCY NEEDS MORE THAN BRAVE SOLDIERS

Every time we hear that another military base has been attacked or more soldiers have been killed in an ambush, like what happened recently in Borno State, one question comes to mind: after more than two decades of fighting insurgency, why are we still struggling to defeat these terrorists? First and foremost, nobody can question the courage of the Nigerian military. Our soldiers have sacrificed immensely for this country, and many have paid the ultimate price. However, bravery alone cannot win a war. Strategy, intelligence, planning, and coordination are equally important. Nigeria once demonstrated its military strength in peacekeeping missions in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Yet at home, we continue to lose personnel to insurgent attacks, with no lasting solution in sight. One concern many Nigerians have is whether lessons are being learned after each setback. In warfare, when a strategy repeatedly exposes troops to danger, it must be reviewed and adjusted. ...

According to reports circulating on social media and among security sources, the abductors allegedly demanded that the ₦1 billion ransom be paid into a bank account located in the Republic of Benin. The kidnappers are also said to be seeking the release of individuals described as bandits currently being held at Agodi and Abolongo correctional facilities. In addition, they reportedly requested two Hilux vehicles as part of the conditions for securing the release of their captives. Perhaps the most unusual of the alleged demands is a request for the amendment of certain Oyo State laws to align with the group's interests, although details of the specific laws involved remain unclear. INSECURITY: Atiku Proposes Regional Government as Solution to Insecurity and Underdevelopment

For many years, former Vice President and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has been one of the most vocal advocates of restructuring Nigeria. He believes that many of the country's challenges—from insecurity and economic stagnation to weak governance—are rooted in an overly centralized system that concentrates too much power at the federal level. At the core of Atiku's vision is a return to a stronger regional structure. Instead of the current arrangement where the 36 states serve as the primary federating units, he proposes that Nigeria's six geopolitical zones should become the main regions of governance, while the existing states function as provinces within those regions. According to him, such a system would promote efficiency, encourage healthy competition among regions, and allow each part of the country to develop according to its unique strengths and resources. More importantly, he argues that it would bring government closer to the people and ma...
